São Miguel is the largest island in Portugal's Azores archipelago, located in the mid-Atlantic, with a mild subtropical climate that stays between 55-75°F (13-24°C) year-round. It's famous for its volcanic landscapes and crater lakes, like the blue and green Lagoa das Sete Cidades, which you can hike around in the dry summers (June to September) or kayak across during the less crowded spring. Winters are wetter, making it the best time to visit the hot springs at Furnas, where you can watch locals cook cozido (meat stew) underground using geothermal heat.
