Muscat sits on the Gulf of Oman, famous for its white mosques, bustling souks, and dramatic mountains meeting the sea. Winters are mild (around 70°F/21°C) - perfect for wandering Muttrah Souk's silver shops or hiking the Al Hajar foothills. Summers hit over 100°F/38°C, but you can escape to the cool Qurum Beach at sunset or explore the air-conditioned Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque with its 35-foot chandelier and 6,500-square-foot Persian carpet. From November to March, the weather is ideal for a dhow cruise past the 16th-century Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali; from April, stick to indoor markets and ocean swims before noon.
