Rivière Noire is a lush region on Mauritius' southwest coast, famous for its rugged interior and the Black River Gorges National Park. The climate is warm year-round (75-85°F / 24-29°C), with a cooler, drier winter from May to November perfect for hiking the park's 30 miles of trails to waterfalls like Cascade de l'Etoile, and a hotter, wetter summer from December to April ideal for deep-sea fishing big-game fish like marlin in the Indian Ocean. In winter, you can also visit Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO site with a 19th-century maroon history, while summer brings cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds, letting you explore Chamarel's seven-colored earth and the nearby rum distillery.
