Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a 104-square-kilometer protected area in northern Mumbai, India, famous for its ancient Kanheri Buddhist caves carved from basalt between the 1st century BCE and the 10th century CE. The climate is tropical monsoon, with dry, comfortable winters (around 70-90°F / 20-32°C) perfect for hiking the 8-kilometer trail to the 2,000-year-old caves, spotting leopards at dawn, or cycling through the forest. Heavy monsoon rains from June to September limit outdoor activities but make the park lush and waterfalls cascade, ideal for visiting the Kanheri complex without crowds, while hot summers (85-100°F / 30-38°C) are best for early morning birdwatching along the Tulsi Lake loop.
