The Rila Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria are famous for the highest peak in the Balkans, Musala (2,925 m), and the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery with its 19th-century frescoes. Summers are mild, 60-75°F (15-24°C), perfect for hiking the Seven Rila Lakes trail, while winters are snowy, 20-35°F (-6 to 2°C), drawing skiers to Borovets resort. You can also visit the monastery year-round, but spring reveals blooming alpine flowers along the easier trails.
